To minimise the impact of the recent landslide in Tuomo community, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has promised to find suitable solution to the natural disaster.
The Commissioner representing Delta State on the NDDC Board, Ogaga Ifowodo, made the promise on recently when he inspected the scene of the landslide.
He said that an immediate solution was necessary to protect the houses that were already endangered while awaiting a permanent solution.
According to him, the ideal solution might involve conducting a deep soil investigation to understand the soil formation and quality of the underlying layers.
A portion of the shoreline protection project in Tuomo community collapsed on March 18, 2018.
Ifowodo said: “It is very unfortunate that it happened, the whole ideal of the NDDC intervening is to protect the shorelines, the people and communities along the shoreline. To a large extent, the goals have been achieved, but for the part that failed, it was already protecting the community.”
Mr. Dada, Bamidele, the Civil/Operations Manager of Vibroflotation and Geotechnical Nigeria Limited, the contracting firm, said that it was an engineering challenge which required an engineering solution.
Mr Ebikoro Tabekaemi, an opinion leader in Tuomo, blamed the situation on poor job by the contractor, alleging that “the other portion failed about two years ago and now the new place. The contractor is not serious with the job, that is the truth.”
