Delta Erstwhile Speaker Embezzles N35.5 Million: Bagged Additional Three Months Suspension

The Delta State House of Assembly has extended its suspension placed on the immediate past Speaker, Rt. Hon. Monday Igbuya with additional three months over his financial recklessness and misappropriation of funds while in office worth the sum of N35.5 million belonging to the house.

This followed a report presented by the adhoc committee constituted to investigate the financial recklessness of the immediate past Speaker that was considered and adopted at today’s plenary presided over by the Speaker, Sheriff Oborevwori,

Presenting the adhoc committee’s report, Deputy Majority Leader, Oboro Preyor said in their findings, discovered that Igbuya during his tenure as Speaker, between April 2016 and May 10, 2017 operated as a Chief Executive Officer and as such ran the financial affairs of the house without recourse to due process.

The house also found that the former Speaker unilaterally withheld the legitimate earnings of seven honorable members of the house adding that there was no record to show that the monies withheld were paid back to the House of Assembly Account.

The house thereafter resolved that all financial entitlements of Igbuya be withheld forthwith and paid into the coffers of the House until such a time that he can offset the monies he unlawfully withheld from his colleagues and the entire sum of money unaccounted for amounting to N35, 536, 370 accruable to the house during his regime.

It will be recall that the house at its sitting on Wednesday, 26 September, 2018, did set up an ad hoc committee to investigate the financial recklessness of the immediate past Speaker, during his regime as speaker.
