Not less than 175 cases of Lassa Fever have been recorded in Edo State with eight persons who contacted the epidemic disease Reportedly Confirm dead since the current outbreak across Six States.
In a statement issued by the Spokeperson to the Deputy Governor, Rt Hon Philip Shaibu, Mr Musa Ebomhiana, gave the casualty figure on yesterday, saying that the state has recorded 175 cases in the current outbreak
The development is coming a day after three people lost their lives to the disease in Kano where 292 people were placed on watch list.
An ambulance has been dedicated strictly for the use of Lassa Fever cases in the state to help facilitate the curbing of the disease.
Ebomhiana said the affected areas in Edo are Esan west, Esan central, Esan north-east, Esan south-east, Igueben, and Etsako west.
“The affected local government are, Esan West, Esan Central, Esan North East, Esan South East, Igueben, and Etsako West. “This is the highest the state has recorded in the history since the first outbreak in the state,”he said
The state government urged all health officials to be proactive in handling such cases in the state.
Meanwhile, it would be Recalled that, the state government on Tuesday, disclosed plans to intensify efforts geared towards curbing the spread of Lassa fever into the state.
In a statement, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, said the state government’s efforts are being led by the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu.
He said, the state government has a robust response system that is activated when cases of Lassa Fever are reported, noting that the government has over the years invested in the strengthening of hospitals to manage the viral disease.
