The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori has condemned the recent spike in cases of sexual and gender based violence in the society, saying it is unacceptable.
In his welcome address on the resumption of Second Session of the Seventh Assembly, the Speaker said that the House will collaborate with the Executive to domensticate the ” Violence Against Person ( Prohibition ) Act, 2015 in the state, adding that lawmakers in the state will also collaborate with relevant stakeholders to root out the menace from the society.
“My dear Colleagues, on behalf of the Members of the Seventh Assembly, I strongly condemn recent spike in cases of sexual and gender based violence in our society. It is unacceptable and therefore we will collaborate with the Executive to domensticate the “Violence Against Person (Prohibition) Act 2015 in the State. We shall also collaborate with relevant stakeholders to root out this menace from our society”, he said.
The Speaker thanked God for His grace and for seeing members through the first session of the Seventh Assembly and called on members to reflect on the last Session and gear up for the new Session.
According to him, the success recorded in the First Session could not have been possible if not for the synergy between the Legislature and the Executive and used the opportunity to thank the state governor, His Excellency, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, for the sustained cordial relationship between the Legislature and the Executive.
“As a House, we cherish the mutual understanding and the checks and balances among the three Arms of Government that has resulted in infrastructural development and the prevailing peace in the state”, the Speaker added.
Rt Hon Oborevwori also commended his Colleagues for their unwavering support for the Leadership of the House throughout the First Session, saying that; ” I thank you most especially for your dedication and commitment to the tasks of Legislature and I solicit for your continued support in this new Session”.
He equally expressed his appreciation to Management and Staff of the Assembly for their support to the Leadership and Members of the House and urged everyone to continue to observe the NCDC protocols and governmental guidelines in the fight against the CoronaVirus.
“On this note, May I on behalf of Members and Staff of the Delta State House of Assembly, wish our amiable Governor, His Excellency, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, his wife and daughter a quick recovery and sound health. I wish to assure His Excellency that our prayers are with his family in this trying moment. In the same vein, on behalf of the House, I also wish to convey our prayers to every case of the CoronaVirus in the State”, he said.
The Speaker called on Chairmen of Committees who are yet to submit reports on bills and other matters referred to their Committees to turn in their reports to enable the House process them on time.
