Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, has emphasized the importance of journalists upholding the ethics of their profession. He made this call while hosting Assembly Correspondents who visited his office to express gratitude for the robust relationship between the lawmakers and the media in 2024.
Guwor urged media professionals to shun pecuniary interests and avoid malicious reports, which he believes have become prevalent due to the influx of quacks in the profession. He encouraged the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) to find ways to eliminate quackery and maintain the integrity of the profession.
The Speaker commended the Assembly Correspondents for their balanced and diligent reporting, urging them to sustain their good work. He emphasized that integrity is key to success and a happy life, and encouraged journalists to strive for excellence without bitterness or pecuniary gains.
Guwor assured that the 8th Assembly would not gag the press, instead encouraging the media to seek clarification on any issues before publishing. He praised the symbiotic relationship between the lawmakers and the media, expressing his commitment to sustaining this collaboration.
Earlier, Mr. Andrew Ikehi, Leader of the Assembly Correspondents, had thanked the Speaker for fostering a robust relationship between the lawmakers and the media. He pledged the Correspondents’ support for ensuring hitch-free reportage in subsequent years.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bayelsa State Council, has emphasized the need for a stronger partnership between journalists and the Nigerian Police Force. This call was made by the NUJ Chairman, Comrade Tonye Yemoleigha, during a courtesy visit to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 16, Dr. Adebola Hamzat, in Yenagoa.
Comrade Yemoleigha highlighted the importance of collaboration between the two institutions, particularly in information gathering and intelligence sharing. He noted that this synergy would not only benefit the society but also enhance the safety and security of lives and property in Bayelsa and Nigeria at large.¹
Dr. Hamzat, in his response, appreciated the visit and assured that the police are committed to the partnership. He commended the conventional media’s role in shaping public opinion but cautioned bloggers and social media influencers to maintain professionalism in their reporting.
