Women Groups Demand Justice for 71-Year-Old Widow Assaulted by Vigilante Members in Bayelsa

A coalition of women’s organizations in Bayelsa State has condemned the alleged assault of a 71-year-old widow, Madam Sudinah Andrew, by vigilante members in Korokorosei community, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

The widow was reportedly chained to a pole at the Market Square, sparking outrage among women groups in the state.

The women’s coalition, comprising various advocacy groups, visited the widow in the hospital, where she is receiving treatment.

They expressed their support for her and demanded the arrest and prosecution of those involved in her public embarrassment.

Barrister Dise Goddy Harry, leader of the Do Foundation Team, called on the Nigerian Police, the State Government, and the Bayelsa Non-Governmental Forum (BANGOF) to investigate the incident and summon the vigilante members involved.

Harry emphasized that the action of the vigilante members infringed on the widow’s fundamental human rights and that no culture or tradition is above the Nigerian constitution.

The coalition also urged Traditional Rulers and Community heads to review harmful beliefs and traditions that perpetuate violence against women and children.

Tari Tina Youdubagha, Team Lead of the End Violence Against Women and Children (EVAWC), demanded that those responsible for the assault be brought to justice.

The widow’s family members, including her son, Dr. Ebimobotei Mao Bunu, and junior brother, Mr. ThankGod Bukuromo Andrew, expressed sadness and shock over the incident.

They revealed that the widow was falsely accused of attempting to harm her niece and was threatened with 50 strokes of cane.
