Tragedy Strikes in Calabar: Police Inspector Goes on Shooting Spree After Night Shift

A horrific incident occurred at the Atakpa Divisional Police Station in Calabar, Cross River State, on Sunday morning. Police Inspector Effiong Bassey, who had just returned from night duty, suddenly went on a shooting spree, leaving a trail of destruction and chaos.

According to eyewitnesses, Inspector Bassey began acting strangely upon his return from a microfinance bank duty post.

He refused to hand over his weapon, cocked his AK-47 rifle, and threatened to shoot his colleagues.

A police tactical team was called in to handle the situation, but upon sighting them, Inspector Bassey opened fire, hitting and killing 41-year-old Mrs. Ijoema Obot, the wife of a retired police officer, and injuring two others.

The Cross River police spokesperson, SP Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident and stated that the situation was brought under control.

Inspector Bassey was disarmed and taken into custody, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of his strange behavior.
